Veja Kocarik transforms Slovakian primary cut garment making into garments with a sensitivity and freedom of today. Known for its airy, feminine aesthetic often achieved through traditional crafts of the area, the brand was founded in 2020 by Veronika Kocarikova. Her designs aspire women to perceive oneself with joy and courage to dress for themselves, to desire liberation from the outside world, to be longed for, to live in a fantasy of their own tribe.
The core of Veja Kocarik’s collections are dresses, gracefully enhancing femininity, matching skirts and tops, to break up and make up. A versatile array of silhouettes to dress up or dress down, to lounge in the countryside or to attend a gala. The garment is designed to maintain the most treasured emotions of the past crafting practices, with rituals and folk music, with the warm hands and determined words, to get dressed first so they can play to undress later.
Veronika developed a sustainable ethos within the brand creating collections with deadstock or second use materials. All pieces are handcrafted by using past artisanal techniques from the area of her origin, helping them to live on. Veja Kocarik aspires to create clothes that will be loved and lived, they will be good enough to pass down or to preserve, maintaining tradition with future aligned.
THE DESIGNER
Veronika’s work is in the intersection of revival of primary cut garment making and the delicacy of documenting a lifestyle that once surrounded such practice. Growing up in Slovakia surrounded by rich crafts heritage, she has taken inspiration from the lives of women sewing garments at home, simply for themselves.
During her studies at the Oslo National Academy of Arts, Norway, she researched and documented a series of their practices, gaining a deep knowledge within this ethnographic area. She gained valuable experiences as womenswear designer and costume designer, as well as exhibiting artist, within the material based and textile art in Norway, Denmark and Slovakia. She is now producing small volume collections and custom made garment pieces, as well as researching the topics of domestic sewing practices within design and fashion. Her works can be seen or rented in Bratislava or purchased on her website.
